During
the British rule, Kolkata was the center of all administrative
activities. The wealthy and respectable Chittagonians lived in Kolkata
for their business, job, education and many other activities. It was an
excellent place for higher education too. Many poor Chittagonian
students used to face a lot of problems for residence, lodging and job
there. With the tireless endeavor of those determined students boost up
by cooperation and financial assistance of the then Kolkata based
wealthy Chittagonians 'Chittagong Muslim Chattra Samity' was established
in the year 1912. Later in 1938 it was expanded and renamed as the
'Chattagram Muslim Chattra and Jana Samity'. The Samity was shifted to
Dhaka after the partition of India in 1947. At first it was renamed as
Islamabad Samity after amendment of its by-laws in 1954 to allow all
Chittagonians to become members of the Samity irrespective of their
religion, caste or sect. In 1963 further amendment of by- laws was made
to rename it as 'Chattagram Samity-Dhaka', to make it an icon of
Chittagong at Dhaka which is symbolized by sky-breaking Chattagram
Bhaban at 32, Topkahana Road. In the mean time samity adopted its
written constitution to make it a fully non-political, non-communal and
non-controversial social organization. Considering the importance of
Chittagong, the samity has taken its 'motto' as "Chittagong's
development is inevitable for national prosperity". By now the Samity
has a large number of members in three categories including life, patron
and honorary members. Samity's programs and different activities are
executed by three committee's i.e. Executive committee, Advisory
committee and Trustee Board.
